Unlooped & Kevin Martin are proud to present Spring Beats, a follow up to last year's Winter Beats. This time we bring in producer and Ninja Tune artist Blockhead, producer and visual artist Big Pauper, and Milwaukee's adoptahighway, and Plight of A Parasite for an evening of amazing music. Plus DJ sets from DJ Tarik.
Blockhead - ninja tune, subversive
Tony Simon AKA Blockhead was born and raised in Downtown Manhattan, in New York City. The son of an artist, he found a fondness for music at a young age. In particular, he fell in love with Hip Hop. In his early teens he began penning rhymes and eventually was part of a group called The Overground with a bunch of his friends. While he loved rapping, he also always had an interest in the musical side of things so he would soon abandon his dreams of being a rapper for being the man who made the beats. This was a wise choice.
Eventually, he and his friend Aesop Rock would meet and begin to make music together and release it on the internet. In 2000, Aesop's album Float was released on Mush Records and quickly propelled both Aesop and Blockhead into notoriety. After that, Blockhead released a breakbeat album on Mush called Blockhead's Broke Beats.
As well as making solo albums and working with Aesop, blockhead has also worked with artists like Murs, Slug, Mike Ladd, Cage, Open Mike Eagle, Maclethal, SA Smash, Isaiah Toothtaker, Illogic and others.
Blockhead has also been busy touring the last 8 years with groups like Aesop Rock, Dj Cam, Amon Tobin, Bonobo, Kid Koala, Cold Cut, Emancipator, and many others.
Currently, he's finsishing up a bevy of projects , including a new solo album Interludes After Midnight (His fifth album on Ninja Tune), and looking forward to releasing all that new music to the public in the near future.
Big Pauper - circle into square, folktek, fake four
Big Pauper is an acclaimed (ex) mash-up artist, electronic /psychedelic hip hop producer, circuit bent visual artist, mad scientist, founder of the abstract hip-hop label Token Recluse Records, and member of the Folktek artist collaborative.
adoptahighway - wednesday sound, ill pill records
adoptahighway is the moniker of classically trained music producer Barry Paul Clark. Throughout his years of formal music training and receiving a bachelor's degree in classical performance, Clark devoted time and efforts to his electronic compositions. The formal training helped Clark in developing a unique sound with knowledge of classical theory, harmony and composition techniques.
While drawing inspiration from romantic era to minimalist composers, Clark also gathers inspiration from patterns of thought and memory, physical and non-physical relationships, and using objects to represent an idea or emotion, which is how the moniker of adoptahighway was chosen.
Using controllers and performance software, his live shows are energetic, emotive, engaging and honest. Clark firmly believes that, rather than tag genres or artists to his music to give a predetermined expectation, listeners should be encouraged to open their ears and try to find their own connection to the sound.
Plight of a Parasite - unlooped, the figureheads
Plight of a Parasite (POP) is a collaboration by Milwaukee-based artists Tracksmith and Jer One the Emseer. POP creates soulful, meditative and frenetic soundscapes by combining elements of experimental electronica and hip-hop.
