Milwaukee was named one of America's top 12 "ArtPlaces" today by ArtPlace, a public-private coalition of major foundations and the National Endowment for the Arts.
The 12 communities were identified as having successfully combined the arts, artists and venues along with independent businesses, restaurants and a walkable lifestyle to create more vibrant neighborhoods.
The winning cities are:
ArtPlace provides placemaking grants for locally-initiated projects in cities across the country, including in some communities named the most vibrant and art-centric in the nation today. One of its goals is to spark revitalization and economic development through innovation and the arts.
Milwaukee's Greater Milwaukee Committee received a $500,000 grant to grow southeastern Wisconsin's design and technology sector in 2011.
